short circuits

Wiring gone wrong

Short circuits names the verb and noun together.

To short-circuit is to bypass the normal path—electricity finding an unintended route, or a process being cut off before completion: The leak short-circuited the whole system.

A short circuit is the event itself, usually causing failure or damage.

Figuratively, anything that derails a process short-circuits it: Panic short-circuits rational thought.
