ship's biscuit

Long-lasting sea ration

Ship's biscuit is a hard, dry cracker baked without fat or leavening, designed to remain edible for months or years at sea.

Also called hardtack.

The biscuit had to be soaked in water, coffee, or stew before eating, and often became infested with weevils on long voyages.

It was a staple of naval and military provisions into the early twentieth century.
