shield-maiden

Viking female fighter

A shield-maiden is a female warrior in Norse mythology and Viking legend, a woman who chose to fight alongside men in battle rather than take a domestic role.

The term appears in Old Norse sagas and has been revived in modern fantasy literature and media: Brienne was the shield-maiden of the group, fierce and loyal.

Sometimes spelled as one word.
