shell scripts
Terminal batch files
Shell scripts are programs written in a shell language—text files containing commands that a Unix-like operating system's command interpreter executes sequentially.
They automate repetitive tasks, manage system operations, and chain together other programs.
The name reflects that the shell is the outer layer users interact with, wrapping the operating system's core: I wrote a shell script to back up my files every night.
