file permissions
Digital access rules
File permissions are settings that control who can access, modify, or execute a computer file.
Operating systems typically distinguish between reading (viewing contents), writing (changing contents), and executing (running as a program).
Permissions can be set for the file's owner, a group, or all users: Check the file permissions if you're getting an "access denied" error.
The term extends to folders and directories, where execute permission means the ability to enter and list contents.
