sending off

Departure party ritual

A sending off is an expulsion from a sporting event, especially in football (soccer), when a referee shows a player a red card and orders them off the field: He received a sending off for violent conduct.

The term also describes a farewell gathering or departure ceremony: We gave her a proper sending off before she moved abroad.
