semitrucks

Big rig vehicles

Semitrucks are the large commercial vehicles that haul freight across highways, consisting of a cab (the tractor) attached to a detachable trailer.

The "semi" refers to the trailer, which has wheels only at the rear and relies on the tractor for front support—hence "semitrailer," shortened in American usage to semitruck or just semi.

These vehicles dominate long-haul shipping and are also called eighteen-wheelers, big rigs, or tractor-trailers.

A semitruck jackknifed on the interstate, blocking all lanes.
