semis

Penultimate tournament rounds

Semis is the plural of semi, an informal shortening with several applications.

Most often it refers to semi-trailer trucks—the large rigs that haul freight on highways: Three semis jackknifed in the storm.

In British English, semis are semi-detached houses sharing one wall with a neighbor.

The word also appears in sports for semifinal rounds: Both teams advanced to the semis.
