self-organization
Emergent pattern formation
Self-organization is the emergence of order or structure without external direction—components arrange themselves through their own interactions.
The concept appears across disciplines: molecules self-organize into crystals, birds self-organize into flocks, markets self-organize prices.
In social contexts, self-organization describes groups that coordinate without central authority: The neighborhood cleanup was entirely self-organization—no one was in charge.
