Second breakfast is a meal eaten between breakfast and lunch, lighter than a full meal but more substantial than a snack.
The term gained wide recognition through Tolkien's hobbits, who eat second breakfast as part of their seven daily meals.
Outside Middle-earth, it describes any mid-morning eating occasion: I was hungry by ten, so I had a second breakfast.
