sea chanties
Maritime work music
Sea chanties are work songs traditionally sung by sailors to coordinate physical labor aboard ships—hauling ropes, raising anchors, pumping bilges.
The rhythm helped synchronize group effort, with a leader singing verses and the crew joining on the chorus.
The spelling varies: chanty, chantey, shanty.
The songs experienced a revival as folk music and again as an internet phenomenon in the early 2020s.
