sapsucker

Bark-boring avian forager

A sapsucker is a North American woodpecker that drills shallow holes in tree bark to feed on the sap that flows out, along with insects attracted to it.

Unlike other woodpeckers that bore deep into wood for insects, sapsuckers create distinctive rows of small wells in the bark.

The name is occasionally used as a mild, folksy insult suggesting someone is foolish or worthless.
