countermining

Digging beneath diggers

Countermining is the practice of digging tunnels to intercept or destroy enemy tunnels, a military technique dating back to siege warfare when attackers would tunnel under fortifications.

Defenders would countermine by digging their own tunnels to collapse or flood the enemy's passages, or to engage enemy sappers underground.

The term extends figuratively to any effort aimed at thwarting someone else's covert schemes: The campaign spent weeks countermining their opponent's whisper campaign.
