fieldworks

Hastily built ramparts

Fieldworks are temporary fortifications constructed during military operations—earthen banks, trenches, and barriers built to defend a position or shelter troops.

Unlike permanent fortifications, fieldworks are improvised from available materials: The soldiers spent the night digging fieldworks.

The term also applies to archaeological or scientific work conducted in the field rather than a laboratory, though that sense more commonly appears as the singular fieldwork.
