salt ponds
Coastal harvest basins
Salt ponds are shallow bodies of water with high salinity, either naturally occurring in coastal or desert environments or artificially created for salt production.
In salt harvesting, seawater is channeled into ponds where evaporation concentrates the brine until salt crystallizes: The salt ponds turned pink from algae as the water evaporated.
Salt ponds also serve as habitats for specialized wildlife.
