Alcatraz Island
San Francisco penitentiary
Alcatraz Island is a small rocky island in San Francisco Bay, best known as the site of a notorious federal penitentiary that operated from 1934 to 1963.
The prison held inmates considered too dangerous or escape-prone for other facilities, including Al Capone.
Alcatraz or the Rock often refers to the prison itself: He did time on Alcatraz.
Now a national park and tourist destination.
