sabre-toothed cat

Ice Age predator

A sabre-toothed cat is any of several extinct predatory mammals with elongated, blade-like upper canine teeth, most famously *Smilodon*, which roamed the Americas until roughly 10,000 years ago.

Despite the name, these animals were not closely related to modern cats.

The dramatic fangs, up to seven inches long, likely evolved for killing large prey.

Also spelled saber-toothed cat.
