ground sloth
Prehistoric giant herbivore
Ground sloths were large, slow-moving mammals that lived in the Americas until roughly 10,000 years ago.
Unlike their small, tree-dwelling modern relatives, ground sloths were terrestrial and could reach the size of elephants.
They walked on the sides of their feet due to massive claws.
Their extinction coincided with human arrival in the Americas.
