rust-belt
Declining manufacturing region
The Rust Belt is the region of the northeastern and midwestern United States where heavy industry—steel, auto manufacturing, machinery—has declined since the mid-20th century.
The name evokes abandoned factories rusting in place: Rust Belt cities like Detroit and Cleveland lost half their population.
As an adjective, rust-belt describes the economic and cultural character of these areas: rust-belt voters, rust-belt politics.
