economic refugee
Hardship-driven emigrant
A person who leaves their home country primarily to escape poverty, unemployment, or lack of economic opportunity rather than war or political persecution.
The term is sometimes used dismissively to distinguish such migrants from those fleeing violence, implying their claims are less legitimate: Critics called them economic refugees, not real asylum seekers.
The line between economic desperation and persecution often blurs in practice.
