fledging

Developing flight ability

Fledging is the process of a young bird developing feathers sufficient for flight, or the act of leaving the nest for the first time: The robin chicks are fledging earlier this year.

Extended to any young creature or endeavor in its earliest stages of development, though the adjective fledgling is far more common for this purpose.
