romaine

Long-leafed lettuce

Romaine is a lettuce with long, crisp leaves that stand upright rather than forming a tight head.

The name comes from French laitue romaine—Roman lettuce—reflecting its path to France via Rome.

Its sturdy leaves and slightly bitter flavor make it the standard for Caesar salads.

I prefer romaine to iceberg.
