exit ramp

Freeway leaving lane

An exit ramp is a short road that allows vehicles to leave a highway or freeway, curving down to connect with surface streets.

The term extends figuratively to any means of leaving a situation gracefully: The negotiations gave both sides an exit ramp.

Also called an off-ramp.
