lay-by

Roadside stopping area

A lay-by is a paved area alongside a road where vehicles can pull off temporarily—to rest, check maps, or let faster traffic pass.

British usage.

In retail, especially Australian and New Zealand English, lay-by (or layby) is a payment plan where goods are set aside until fully paid for: I put the coat on lay-by.
