roomer

Boardinghouse tenant type

A roomer is a person who rents a room in someone else's house, typically without kitchen privileges or full run of the household.

The arrangement is more limited than that of a tenant with a full apartment: The widow took in roomers to make ends meet.

The term is somewhat old-fashioned, largely replaced by "boarder" or "lodger."
