reform schools
Youth correctional facilities
Reform schools are institutions for confining and supposedly rehabilitating juvenile offenders or troubled youth.
The term dates from an era when such facilities claimed to reform character through discipline, education, and labor.
In practice, many were harsh or abusive, and the term now carries connotations of punishment disguised as rehabilitation: He spent two years in reform school for stealing cars.
The concept has largely given way to "juvenile detention centers" or "youth correctional facilities."
