borstals

Juvenile detention facilities

Borstals were British youth detention centers for offenders roughly aged 16 to 21, intended to reform rather than merely punish.

Named after the village in Kent where the first one opened in 1902, they emphasized training and discipline over imprisonment.

The system was abolished in 1982, replaced by youth custody centers, but the term persists in British cultural memory: He spent two years in borstal as a teenager.
