free schools
No-cost public academies
Free schools are publicly funded schools in England that operate independently of local authority control, similar to American charter schools.
They're established by groups such as parents, teachers, charities, or businesses, with freedom to set their own curriculum and pay scales.
The term also has an older sense: schools offering education without tuition fees, or experimental schools from the 1960s–70s that rejected traditional structure in favor of student-directed learning.
