reflexives

Words indicating oneself

Reflexives are words that refer back to the subject of a sentence—pronouns like myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, and themselves: She hurt herself, They blamed themselves.

In grammar discussions, reflexives also includes reflexive verbs, where the action returns to the actor: He perjured himself.

The term appears mainly in language instruction and linguistic analysis.
