recolonise
Return to occupy
To recolonise is to colonise again—to re-establish control over a territory that was previously colonised, or to repopulate an area with organisms that had disappeared from it.
The political sense carries the weight of colonial history: Critics warned that economic dependence would recolonise the newly independent nation.
In ecology, the term is neutral: Wolves have begun to recolonise their former range.
