rate limit

API traffic ceiling

A rate limit is a restriction on how frequently an action can be performed within a given time period.

The term appears most often in computing, where servers impose rate limits to prevent abuse or overload: The API rate limit is 100 requests per minute.

To rate limit is to impose such a restriction.

When you've exceeded the threshold, you've been rate limited: I got rate limited trying to send too many messages.
