backoff

Cease your advances

Backoff is a pause or retreat before retrying something, especially in computing where systems wait progressively longer between failed attempts to avoid overwhelming a server: The API uses exponential backoff.

More generally, it describes any strategic withdrawal or reduction in intensity: a backoff in negotiations, a backoff from aggressive tactics.
