price ceiling
Regulated upper limit
A price ceiling is a government-imposed limit on how high a price can be charged for a good or service.
Rent control is a common example: The city set a price ceiling on apartments to keep housing affordable.
When ceilings fall below market equilibrium, they typically create shortages—more people want the product than sellers will provide at the capped price.
