radionuclides

Decay-emitting atomic variants

Radionuclides are atoms with unstable nuclei that emit radiation as they decay into more stable forms.

The term combines "radioactive" with "nuclide" (a specific nuclear configuration).

Radionuclides occur naturally, as with radon and uranium, or are produced artificially for medical imaging, cancer treatment, and nuclear power: The scan uses radionuclides to detect tumors.
