radicles
First roots emerging
Radicles are the first roots to emerge from germinating seeds, the tiny embryonic structures that anchor a seedling and begin absorbing water and nutrients from soil.
In botany, the radicle develops downward while the shoot grows upward.
The term occasionally appears in chemistry to describe small chemical radicals or root-like molecular structures.
The radicles had already broken through the seed coats after just two days of soaking.
