taproots

Deep main roots

Taproots is the plural of taproot, the main root of a plant that grows straight down and from which smaller lateral roots branch off.

Carrots, dandelions, and parsnips are familiar examples—the edible part is the taproot itself.

The term extends figuratively to mean a central source or origin from which other things develop: The taproot of her success was years of disciplined practice.

Plants with taproots are often difficult to transplant or eradicate because the root reaches deep into the soil.
