seed leaves
Embryonic plant leaves
Seed leaves are the first leaves to emerge from a germinating seed, part of the plant embryo rather than true foliage.
They often look different from the mature leaves that follow—simpler, rounder, sometimes fleshy with stored nutrients.
Botanists call them cotyledons.
The seed leaves pushed through the soil, pale and delicate.
