quetzals

Central American birds

Quetzals are brilliantly colored birds of Central American rainforests, prized for their iridescent green plumage and the male's extraordinarily long tail feathers.

The resplendent quetzal was sacred to the Maya and Aztecs.

Quetzal is also the monetary unit of Guatemala, named after the bird: The exchange rate was eight quetzals to the dollar.
