quarter note

One beat symbol

A quarter note is a musical note lasting one quarter of a whole note, or one beat in common time.

It's the basic rhythmic unit in most Western music, the pulse you tap your foot to.

In British terminology, it's called a crotchet.

The melody opens with four quarter notes.
