quaich

Two-handled drinking vessel

A quaich is a shallow two-handled drinking cup, traditionally Scottish.

The distinctive twin handles—called lugs—allowed the cup to be passed between host and guest as a symbol of friendship and welcome.

Quaichs were originally carved from wood but later made from silver or pewter: They toasted with whisky from an antique quaich.
