punkies
Tiny biting flies
Punkies are tiny biting flies, especially the midges that swarm at dusk in warm weather.
The name is used mainly in the northeastern United States.
These insects are small enough to pass through ordinary window screens, delivering bites disproportionate to their size: The punkies were so bad we had to go inside.
