pretest

Check before teaching

A pretest is an assessment given before instruction or treatment to establish a baseline.

Teachers use pretests to gauge what students already know; researchers use them to measure participants before an intervention.

The verb means to administer such a test: We pretested the students on Monday.

Pretest also means to test something in advance: The software was pretested before release.
