postholes

Dug for posts

Postholes are cylindrical holes dug into the ground to receive fence posts, signposts, or structural supports.

The term also describes the archaeological remains of such holes, which reveal where ancient structures once stood: The postholes showed the outline of a Roman building.

A posthole digger is the tool—either manual or powered—used to bore them.
