furrows

Grooves in soil

Furrows are long, narrow trenches cut into the earth, especially by a plow preparing soil for planting: The farmer drove the tractor in straight furrows across the field.

The word extends to any similar groove or channel—the furrows on a vinyl record, or the deep lines that form on a worried brow.

To furrow is to make such grooves: She furrowed her brow in concentration.
