port number

Connection endpoint identifier

A port number is a numerical identifier (0–65535) that directs network traffic to specific applications or services on a computer.

When data arrives at a device, the port number tells the operating system which program should receive it.

Well-known ports handle standard services: 80 for web traffic, 443 for secure connections, 25 for email.

The firewall blocks all incoming traffic except on port 22.
