polyuria

Abnormally high output

Polyuria is the medical term for producing abnormally large volumes of urine, typically defined as exceeding about three liters per day in adults.

It is a symptom rather than a disease, commonly associated with diabetes (both mellitus and insipidus), kidney disorders, or excessive fluid intake.

Polyuria often occurs alongside polydipsia, or excessive thirst, as the body attempts to compensate for fluid loss.

The patient's polyuria prompted testing for diabetes.
