polioviruses

Infantile paralysis agents

Polioviruses are the viruses that cause poliomyelitis, a disease that can paralyze or kill by attacking nerve cells in the spinal cord.

Three types exist, targeted by vaccines developed in the 1950s.

Once widespread, polioviruses have been nearly eradicated through global vaccination campaigns, persisting in only a few countries.
