plesiosaurs

Ancient aquatic reptiles

Plesiosaurs were large marine reptiles that lived during the Mesozoic Era, distinguished by their broad flat bodies, four paddle-like flippers, and typically long necks with small heads.

They went extinct alongside the dinosaurs about 66 million years ago.

The Loch Ness Monster, if it existed, would presumably be a surviving plesiosaur.
