plain-saw

Tangential wood cutting

Plain-saw is a method of cutting lumber where the blade passes straight through the log, producing boards with grain patterns that vary depending on their position relative to the center.

It's the most economical sawing technique, yielding wider boards with less waste than quarter-sawing, though the resulting wood is more prone to warping: plain-sawn oak for the flooring.
