first ascents
Maiden mountain conquests
First ascents are the initial successful climbs of mountains, peaks, or routes that no one has climbed before.
The term belongs primarily to mountaineering, where first ascents carry prestige and historical significance: Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made the first ascent of Everest in 1953.
In rock climbing, first ascents of new routes often grant the climber naming rights.
